Benfica lose Eusebio Cup yet again - continuing a very unwanted record

Benfica fell to an exciting 3-2 defeat to French side Lyon as they lost the Eusebio Cup for the fifth time in a row.

The annual pre-season competition, which takes place every year, holds great symbolic meaning to the Portuguese club, with the competition commemorating club legend Eusebio. However, a defeat to Lyon meant that Benfica have not won the one-off fixture now since 2012, when they beat Real Madrid 5-2 in a thrilling encounter.

Since then, Benfica have fallen to a 2-0 defeat against Brazilian side Sao Paulo in 2013, a 1-0 loss to Dutch club Ajax the following year, a disappointing 3-0 thumping at the hands of Monterrey in 2015, and a 2016 penalty shoot-out defeat to Torino.

With no version of the competition played in 2017, the 3-2 loss to Lyon makes it five defeats in five for the Lisbon giants.

Benfica were never in front against the Ligue 1 club, falling 2-0 behind in the first 45 minutes, before a Benfica fight back pulled things back to 2-2 after a goal from Pizzi on the hour mark and a Marcelo own goal four minutes later.

However, Lyon struck late courtesy of a goal from Martin Terrier, leaving Benfica without a win in their own competition for several years.
