Buffon on his way to Portugal?

Buffon on his way to Portugal?

Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon is being closely linked with a move to Portugal this summer.

The 41-year old shot-stopper, who represented his country 176 times, played for Juventus for 17 years before joining Paris Saint Germain in the summer of 2018.

It was a mixed season for the Parma youth product as he came under criticism for his performance against Manchester United in the second leg of their round of 16 Champions League clash, while he also only managed to play 17 of PSG’s 38 league matches, constantly competing with Areola for a starting spot.

He ultimately ended up being on the losing side in 3 of his last 4 matches, conceding 10 goals in the process, a poor return for a side the stature of PSG in the French game.

And, after just one season with the French giants, he has left the club after his contract came to an end - and Porto are seen as a potential destination for the veteran goalkeeper.

With Iker Casillas’ future in football still uncertain, Buffon is touted as a potential heir to the Spaniard’s thrown in between the sticks at the Portuguese emblem, which would see one legend of the game directly replace another.

However, Buffon is also thought to be interested in returning to Italy, where he could link up with his former club Parma, who finished 14th in Seria A last campaign.

It can be recalled that Portuguese veteran centreback Bruno Alves, now 37, is the captain of Parma, playing 33 of their 38 league games last season.
