Guimarães 0-1 Feirense; Feirense cause an upset after beating summer spenders Guimarães

Guimarães fell to their third defeat of the season after conceding in the 88th minute.

Guimarães, who brought in some high-profile names only this summer, are yet to get a point on the board in the new campaign, having also lost 3-2 against Benfica, almost pulling off an almighty comeback from three goals down.

The week before that, Guimarães then suffered another surprise result, losing 2-0 to fellow Primeira Liga outfit Tondela in the League Cup preliminary round, putting them out of the competition before it had really begun. However, as against Benfica in the second half, there were positive signs for Guimarães, who looked good in possession but lacked that cutting edge.

And it was a similar story last night against Feirense. Having had some half-chances, Guimarães were perhaps the team that edged the majority of the match, and a draw seemed a fair scoreline. However, with just two minutes left on the clock, Fabio Sturgeon found that back of the net to give Feirense the perfect start to the league season, now sitting in the top four with six points from a possible six; only the traditional Big Three match their start to the new campaign.

The goal itself was somewhat fortuitous, with Feirense scoring on the counter. In a two-on-five situation, Guimarães did not seem under too much threat, but when a defensive tackle rebounded off Sturgeon, and Guimarães' nearest defender slipped to the floor, the path opened up for Feirense, with Elvis Babanco able to slot in Sturgeon, who curled the ball perfectly beyond Douglas Jesus between the sticks to hit his high strike into the back of the net.
