João Felix given biggest release clause in Atletico Madrid history

João Felix is still making headlines across the continent thanks to his incredible 120 million euro move to Atletico Madrid.

Felix will be an Atletico Madrid player thanks to the Spanish club triggering his release clause, with Simeone’s side seeing off a last-minute attempt from arch-rivals Real Madrid to sign the Benfica forward.

Instead, negotiations are already finalised between the player and club, and the release clause in Felix’s new contract is how being reported in Spain.

Unsurprisingly, with Felix being Atleti’s most expensive ever signing, he is also going to have the highest release clause in the club’s history.

According to Spanish paper AS, his release clause is set at 350 million euros, nearly three times the fee that Atletico Madrid are paying for him.

This far surpasses the previous record release clause, which was set by Antoine Griezmann at 200 million euros.

That release clause reduces in July to 120 million euros, making him far more acquirable by the top clubs in Europe, and Barcelona are likely to be his next destination.

Felix is seen as a direct replacement for Griezmann, the 19-year old sharing similar traits to the French World Cup winner.
