WATCH: Tears of goodbye? Emotional Bruno Fernandes after Sporting defeat fuels further speculation about his future

Bruno Fernandes was visibly emotional after Sporting were thumped by Benfica in the Supertaca, sparking further suggestions that this was indeed his last game in a Sporting shirt.

Sporting ultimately suffered a humiliating 5-0 loss at the hands of arch-rivals Benfica in the inaugral match of the campain, showing the current gulf in class between the sides.

His clear emotion could therefore have been a result of the final scoreline, a humbling result that would be enough to make anyone associated with Sporting feel wholly dejected.

That said, he was clearly that bit more devastated than the majority of the other Sporting players around him, further implying that these could have been the tears of a man that knew his time at the club was coming to an end.

A move to England has certainly been on the cards all summer, with Manchester United having been scouting the Primeira Liga’s player of the year considerably throughout the summer. That move has still not come to fruition though, with Manchester United failing to come close to an agreement with Sporting so far this window.

Indeed, it has recently come to light that Manchester United are reportedly no longer interested in the services of Bruno Fernandes, with reports from England indicating that they have turned their attentions away from the Portuguese international.

That runs counter to reports from Portugal though, with A Bola suggesting that United are getting set to make a substantial offer for the 24-year old midfielder, one that is expected to exceed the 70 million euro asking price of Sporting.

In any case, the lack of progress being made by Manchester United led to Tottenham Hotspur entering the race for Sporting’s captain last week, and they recently flew representatives out to Lisbon to talk to Sporting president Varandas to try and get a deal done from right under the noses of the Red Devils.

Their opening offer fell short of Sporting’s demands of 70 million euros though, meaning that Fernandes’ future remains uncertain.

With little progress having been made over the sale of Bruno Fernandes, superagent Jorge Mendes has recently entered the fold to try and negotiate a move away from the club on behalf of both Sporting and Fernandes.
