Which of these Portuguese teams would you take - Over 25s or Under 25s?

Which of these Portuguese teams would you take - Over 25s or Under 25s?

We take a look at a hypothetical Portugal XI featuring only players under the age of 25 - and compare it with one containing just over 25s.

There’s some good quality in both teams - but which one would you back to win in a hypothetical clash? Let us know what you think.

But now, onto the teams:

Under 25s

A great deal of talent on offer in the U25 group, particularly when it comes to the more offensive players.

With impressive experience amongst a lot of wingers and attackers, it was difficult to decide on the best possible XI in the attacking third of the team.

Worthy of honourable mentions that didn’t make the final cut are the likes of Gelson Martins, Diogo Jota, Rony Lopes, Bruma and Raphael Leao. It seems a crime to leave any of them out.

Ultimately though, we opted for Bernardo Silva and Goncalo Guedes on the right and left side of midfield respectively, with Joao Felix and Andre Silva up front.

In midfield, there were also many names to choose from - Gedson Fernandes, Florentino Luis, Renato Sanches…. but chosen as the midfield partnership were Ruben Neves and Bruno Fernandes. A very strong duo indeed.

The centrebacks, while they basically choose themselves, are also a quality pairing, though it is at full-back and between the sticks that the team perhaps has the biggest weakness.

By no means are the full-backs poor - in fact, they are hugely talented youngsters with impressive futures ahead of them, although neither Ruben Vinagre or Diogo Dalot are the most experienced in terms of their out-and-out senior football and, if this were an actual fixture, that area of the pitch would likely be exploited by the over 25s team.

The goalkeeper is also likely a more unknown quantity to fans outside of Portugal - having featured throughout the season on a regular basis for Braga, though, he is likely the very best U25 goalkeeper Portugal currently have.

Over 25s

The over 25 team will include any player that is 25 or over, and to make the teams more comparable, it has the same 4-4-2 formation as the U25s.

The main difference between the sides, though, is that in the over 25 team, there really aren’t any weaknesses at all, with both experience and quality throughout the field.

That said, you could point to the striker alongside Ronaldo as the only slightly underwhelming part of the team; Dyego Sousa is a good striker, although common consensus probably suggests that he’s not quite at the same top level as the other players in the lineup.

In any case, having Ronaldo up front is more than enough fire power, while the quality on the wings - with both Rafa Silva and Pizzi - also offers good attacking intensity.

The central midfield also had a good blend of tenacity and discipline, with both William Carvalho and Moutinho forging the midfielder partnership.

Rui Patricio is also an exceptional goalkeeper in between the sticks, while Pep and Jose Fonte are proven quality defenders. The full-backs are also superior to those in the U25 team, with much more senior game time to their name.

What do you think of the teams? Which would you back to win in a one-off clash?
