Cristiano Ronaldo no longer Portugal's most valuable player with 6 Portuguese in top 100

Cristiano Ronaldo no longer Portugal's most valuable player with 6 Portuguese in top 100

In an updated ranking of the top 100 most valuable players in Europe’s top 5 leagues, Portugal have no player present in the top 10.

Indeed, according to the CIES football observatory’s updated player values for the end of the season, Portugal’s most valuable player comes in at number 11 - and it's not Cristiano Ronaldo.

Instead, it's Bernardo Silva who's now considered the most valuable Portuguese footballer in the world, given a price tag of €136.9million.

That's nearly twenty million more than his compatriot Ronaldo, who is said to be worth €118.1million, putting him twentieth in the ranking.

Ronaldo is, however, the most valuable player aged 32 or over.

In total, there are just 6 Portuguese players in the top 100 most valuable players in the world, in part due to the fact that the study only takes into account Europe’s top 5 leagues - England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France.

The four that join Ronaldo and Bernardo in the top 100 are João Cancelo, who comes in at position 66, valued at €69million, Gonçalo Guedes in 79th, valued at €67.2million, and Wolves duo Diogo Jota (88th) and Ruben Neves (94th).

Diogo Jota is valued at €64million, while Ruben Neves is valued at €62.4million.

Former Benfica shot-stopper Ederson is also on the list, coming in at number 26, valued at €103million, making him the second most valuable goalkeeper in world football.

The most expensive player on the list is Kylian Mbappe, estimated to be worth 252 million euros.

The CIES Football Observatory state that their improved algorithm “takes into account a wide array of variables such as age, contract, position, minutes, goals, international status, team results, etc.”, which makes it a very thorough and accurate barometer of player value.
