Group of Death: Portugal find out their Euro 2020 group stage opponents

The group stage of next summer's European Championship has now been completed, and has handed Portugal an enthralling selection of fixtures.

Portugal went into the draw as a pot 3 side despite being defending champions after only finishing second in their qualifying group.

Ukraine were the side who finished 1st in Portugal's qualifying campaign, comfortably above Portugal after beating the Seleção 2-1 in Kiev in their penultimate match.

Portugal knew they could go into five of the six possible groups, unable to be drawn alongside Belgium, whose group already had the sides from pot 2 and 3 predetermined due to hosting arrangements - those two sides being Russia and Denmark.

Instead, Portugal, who were officially the best pot 3 team, were drawn in the ultimate group of death alongside hosting nation Germany and world champions France.

From pot 4, Portugal are then expected to be joined by the winner of Nations League path A which will be one of Iceland, Hungary, Bulgaria or Romania.

The draw is as difficult as they come for Portugal, and Selecao fans will be looking forward to some fascinating match-ups going into the tournament, including a rematch of the Euro 2016 final with France o the final matchday of the group.

They will know that anything less than a win in their first group stage match - which will be against the winner of play-off path A - will make their attempt to progress from the group incredibly difficult.

Portugal always knew they were likely to face a lot of travelling time for this competition, with this Euros the first to be set in multiple countries across the continent, but will be relieved to have avoided the dreaded Group A position 4 place which would have led to over 28,000km of air travel if they were to realise their ambitions and go all the way to the final in London on 12th July.

Instead, they will start with a match in Hungary, then travel to Munich to face Germany, before returning to Hungary to play France.
