Jose Mourinho sacked as Manchester United manager

Jose Mourinho has been relieved of his duties at Manchester United after enduring a poor start to the season, with United picking up just 26 points from 17 games and sitting in 6th in the league table.

His sacking comes as little surprise, with many supporters calling for his dismissal long before the club took this decision.

The 55-year old former Real Madrid manager arrived at the club two and a half years ago, helping his side win the Europa League and League Cup, as well as guiding them to a 2nd place finish last season.

However, now sitting a huge 19 points off top spot, actually closer to last than leaders Liverpool, the club have taken the decision that his position as head manager is now completely unsustainable.

Manchester United are now looking for a caretaker manager to take charge of the team before they appoint a permanent manager at the end of the season.

What now for Mourinho?

It is a good question, where could the self-proclaimed "Special One" go now? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure - he won't be short of offers. 

Will he opt for the increasingly common choice to leave the continent and head for China? Will he make a return to Spain, potentially even Real Madrid who are failing to reach the heights expected of them in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo?

 A move to the Portugal national team always feels like something that will occur one day, although with Fernando Santos at the helm, that won't be happening anytime soon.

What about a return to Portugal at club level? Could Mourinho go back to the beginning of his career and pick up on some unfinished business at Benfica, with current manager Rui Vitoria not proving popular amongst fans.

What about Italy? France? Germany? The options are out there, but only time will tell.
