Portugal avoid Germany but draw Ukraine and Serbia in their Euro 2020 qualifying group

Portugal avoid Germany but draw Ukraine and Serbia in their Euro 2020 qualifying group

The draw for the Euro 2020 qualifiers has been completed, a draw which sees Portugal face something of a battle to earn safe passage into the main stage of the European Championship, having to finish above at least one of Ukraine and Serbia to secure qualification.

Ukraine were the pot 2 side drawn into group B alongside Portugal, while World Cup 2018 competitors Serbia, who were the side to avoid from pot 3, join them. The sides completing the group are Lithuania from pot 4 and Luxembourg from pot 5.

Portugal fans will likely be pleased that Germany were avoided from pot 2, who were instead paired with The Netherlands, the side that saw Germany relegated from their UEFA Nations League group.

However, drawing two strong sides in Ukraine and Serbia - who both won their UEFA Nations League groups last month - will provide a challenge, with only the top two sides qualifying for the Euros in 2020.

Portugal do, however, have the backup route into the European Championship in 2020, having reached the semi-final of the UEFA Nations League, which will be hosted in Portugal.

Luxembourg are also a side that are capable of pulling off an upset; in recent years, they have managed to hold Italy to a 1-1 draw, drew 0-0 against France in a 2018 World Cup qualifier, and were only narrowly defeated against Portugal 2-1 back in 2012.

Full group: PORTUGAL, Ukraine, Serbia, Lithuania, Luxembourg.
