Snakes, mistakes, and injury time drama - Marco Silva faces former club Watford

Marco Silva's Everton took on a Watford side that had won just twice in their last eleven games, and knew a win would send them top 6.

And it got off to a great start for the Blues, with a rejuvenated Andre Gomes setting up the first goal of the night, laying there ball off to Richarlison who smashed it into the back of the net and beyond Ben Foster.

There was a hint of good fortune about the goal though, with Walcott, who was well offside, touching the Gomes eventually got to it, and the goal should not have stood.

In any case, Everton and Marco Silva went into the game time break with a narrow advantage, with Silva on his way to securing a pleasing victory over his former club. 

And the resentment towards the Portuguese coach was clear for all to see, with many Watford fans opting to bring rubber snakes to the match in reference to Marco Silva wanting to speak to Everton about becoming their next manager while still in charge of Watford, something the vast majority saw as the turning point in Watford's season and the reason they ultimately went on a dreadful run of form under Silva last season.

And there was a chance that they would get the last laugh; after an incredible Watford double in the space of three minutes, Everton went from being 1-0 up to 2-1 down and on the brink of defeat.

However, Everton were gifted the opportunity for a quick response after a penalty was awarded, which Icelandic international Sigurdsson failed to convert, firing down the middle as Foster kept it out with his foot.

For the rest of the half, Everton created a few half chances but didn't really come close to scoring, and it looked like it was going to be a valuable three points for a Watford side that hadn't tasted victory since 27 October.

However, as is often the case in football, there was drama to the last, with Everton awarded a 96th minute penalty for an unnecessary handball on the edge of the box.

With Richarlison, Sigurdsson and Digne all standing over the ball, taking their time to set up the free-kick, you could sense that this was their last chance to salvage a point, and it was the latter who eventually took it on, striking the ball over the wall and high into the back of the net, a helpless Ben Foster left just watching the ball travel past him.

The result left Everton in sixth place in the table, 6 places and three points above Watford in the league, with Javi Gracia's side winning just two of their last 12 league matches, a poor run of form that matched the final twelve results of Marco Silva's reign at Watford last season and ultimately led to his sacking.

In addition to Andre Gomes and Marco Silva, another Portuguese was heavily involved in this match, with Domingos Quina playing 90 minutes of the encounter for Watford, coming off in stoppage time just before Everton scored their equaliser, having moved to the club from West Ham in the summer. And his energy and enthusiasm in the centre of midfield was clear for all to see.

It was Quina's first ever league start, having come on for Watford in the 52nd minute against Manchester City when already 2-0 down last week.
