Villarreal 1-1 Sporting (agg. 2-1)

Villarreal edged out Sporting CP in Spain to advance to the round of sixteen of the Europa League.

Sporting were up against it going into the clash with the relegation-threatened Spanish outfit, having lost the first leg 1-0 in Lisbon, with Marcos Acuna getting sent off in that outing.

But despite Villarreal dominating the first half, it was Sporting who found the back of the net first, Bruno Fernandes pouncing on a Funes Mori mistake at the back to gallop forward and score in stoppage time.

That goal meant that Sporting were set to take it to extra time, and were in a good position in the context of the tie, knowing that a single goal would see them sit on a two-goal cushion.

However, things quickly became complicated for Sporting, with Jefferson getting himself sent off in the second half for what was construed as a stamp on a Villarreal player, meaning for the second time in the tie Sporting were forced to see out the game with ten men.

With Sporting dropping deeper, it seemed inevitable that they would concede and sure enough, with ten minutes left on the clock, Pablo Fornais slotted home to give Sporting an uphill battle with little time to respond.

Ultimately, the chances were few and far between for the visitors but for a chance in the dying minutes, a beautiful Bruno Fernandes cross picking out Bas Dost at the far post, who could only blaze over from close distance.

It means Portugal are left with just two representatives in Europe - Benfica and Porto.
