Manchester United 1-1 Wolves: Battle of Portuguese managers ends in draw

Nuno Espirito Santo, taking on his ex-Porto boss Jose Mourinho, shared the spoils with the Manchester United manager in an entertaining match that finished 1-1.

Wolves, who were playing exactly the same starting lineup as they had done all season in the Premier League, had the better chances early on, Raul Jimenez denied from opening the scoring only by the left foot of David de Gea. It was Manchester United that took the lead though courtesy of Fred, who also forced Portugal’s Rui Patricio into a magnificent one-handed save towards the end of the first half.

But Wolves, having impressed for so long throughout the game, came up with a splendid goal to earn a potentially valuable point, with Raul Jimenez laying the ball of to Joao Moutinho on the edge of the box, who curled the ball beautifully into the top corner, passed the rooted David de Gea.

The excellent result comes just a few weeks after Nuno Espirito Santo’s side earned an equally credible point against Manchester City at Molineux, with Pep Guardiola full of praise of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The point sees Wolves move to 10th in the table, having picked up 9 points from 6 games, having lost only once all season, a 2-1 defeat to Leicester City in the second week of the league campaign.

Manchester United meanwhile, who manager Jose Mourinho was fairly critical of and suggested were not as motivated as their opponents, sit in 6th, already 8 points off Liverpool in top spot.
